I want to bring to your attention some of the pertinent presenters in the neuropsychotherapy field that are coming up in the next few months at various conferences and workshops.  Most of these people are presenting Australia wide.

Next Monday for instance Norman Doidge, author of “The Brain That Changes Itself” will be in Melbourne, brought here by The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Section of Psychotherapy. This is the same group who, along with  Dr. Paul Valent and the Trauma Foundation first brought Dr. Allan Schore to Australia in 1999.

Doidge’s one day workshop, which I think is already fully booked, is titled: “Neuroplasticity- Core Principles for Mental Health Professionals.”

Many of you will have heard or seen Norman on radio or television before. He has been much concerned with telling us about the amazing plasticity of the brain even in cases where, in previous times, we might have thought damage to the body was such that there would be no hope of getting back the use of limbs etc. Norman gives us much hope that what was done- to mind and body- in the past, can be undone.

Then in September Dr. Bruce Perry will be in Australia again. He has a great website www.ChildTrauma.org if you do not already know his work. Dr. Perry is sponsored, at least in Melbourne by Take Two- the old Berry St. organization that has been known to us for many years. Dr. Perry’s speaking tour is titled: “Transforming Childhood Trauma: Connecting with Empathy and Compassion.” In the abstract it says about the content of the talk: “Theory and research will be interwoven with case examples to assist attendees to further develop their understanding of: the developing brain; the impact of abuse, neglect and poverty of experience; the fear response; the therapeutic web; the place of hope, empathy and relationships and the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics.” You can contact Take Two on trainingevents@berrystreet.org.au

And finally, amongst others of great interest to myself and my colleagues is a visit by Clincial Psychologist, Dr. David Wallin whose presentation is titled “Attachment in Psychotherapy: Integrating attachment with neuroscience, relational psychoanalysis, mindfulness and a focus on the body.” The abstract goes on to say: Dr. Wallin translates the findings of attachment theory research into an innovative framework that grounds adult psychotherapy in the facts of childhood development, and explores how a therapist’s own attachment patterns shape therapy.” Dr. Wallin is being sponsored by Psychoz who continue to produce a wonderful psychotherapy magazine/ professional journal and bring here to Australia an interesting and relevant range of highly qualified presenters to enrich the learning of psychotherapists and others in the helping professions. The Psychoz website is www.psychotherapy.com.au
